[Money] Financial Minimalism

I came across a financial minimalism video by Graham Stephan and decided to add some more ways to save money-

Here are some tips that has helped me save money and time.

Fasting

We already eat too much. More than 60% of American adults are obese- Fasting one meal is actually very good for the health. And you save money and time for cooking or going out to eat. Effective fasting will make you feel more alive and make you healthier. Plus, your financial health will get better as well.

Buy in bulk when in sale

I buy a lot from Costco when there is a good sale. We bought a lot of coconut water, canned food, and noodles when they were on sale. They lasted for a very long time. In fact, we are still consuming them. I think they were on average 15% discount. So I saved money and shopping time. Just make sure it isn’t something that can perish.

Buy ugly/ rejected fruits/produce

Some Korean/Chinese/Hispanic supermarkets have lot of fruits and vegetables that were rejected from Whole Foods and other high-end retailers because the fruits/vegetables did not meet their standards. I love these rejections. The oranges, grapes, and apples are especially delicious. They have bruises and are not pretty but they taste excellent. Some are about to expire but we can make juice. They are extremely cheap. I like to buy a lot but my wife says it may go bad. So I don’t buy as much. We are thankful because we eat good fruits/vegetable, help the planet (else it would go to waste), and save money 😀

Brew smaller amount of coffee frequently using less beans

I rarely buy coffee from a coffee shop. I make it at home. One way to save money is to brew smaller amount of coffee and drink more frequently. I only make a bit of coffee frequently and use less coffee beans (5-7% less). The coffee tastes a bit lighter but it is still good and it has caffeine. The beans will last for sometime, it won’t taste as good but caffeine is caffeine 😀

Buy Similar clothing

I am not Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. I don’t have multiple same clothing. That is a bit too much for me. However, I have very similar clothing. So I don’t have to worry about what to wear and matching. I just put the cloth on and it looks ok. At least, it is sort of acceptable. I save money and minimize time dressing.

Buy used exercise equipment

Exercise equipment tend to last long. Dumbbells are forever pretty much. Buy used ones at a discount. Go to garage sales, they have good discounts. My wife doesn’t like the idea but many exercise equipment are not used much (broken new year resolution) and sell at a discount. You can find good deals. Just need to look around a bit.

Use Scribd for books and audio books

I love reading. I used to use Kindle Unlimited and Audible but found it a bit too expensive. Now I use Scribd. It is much cheaper. The selection of books is decent. I like to read business biographies and they have plenty of those. So you really get your money worth through Scribd.

Hope these tips are helpful in saving money and time. Plus, some will make you healthier and wiser.
