[Economics] Economics of Robbing Delivery Trucks

Gangs are robbing delivery trucks

Why? Because the math works out.

With COVID19, there are more deliveries and with the holiday season coming, delivery trucks are packed with goods-

So the reward of robbing a delivery truck has gone up while the risk has remained the same. Also, many small businesses shut down so they can’t steal those anymore. And there are less pedestrians as well that they can steal from as people are outside less.

Economics of crime- Pure risk vs. reward decision.

As a consequence, not porch pirates but literally delivery truck pirates are here. And the following will be impacted/changed.

First, people won’t get their packages…oh yeah- that is a big problem actually.

Second, insurance delivery will go up and those costs will be passed to the customer. This will hit the low income the most.

Third, some delivery companies will not deliver to dangerous areas, again, affecting the low income areas the most. They will likely force the residents to pick up the packages from the lockers. Again, it will be more cumbersome for the low income.

Fourth, some security measures will be put in place if the insurance cost goes up too high. I doubt drivers will carry guns. But I can see the truck having an extra door to the parcel area, making it harder for the thieves to get the goods. However, the extra door, will increase gas consumption so the firm may not like it. I can see delivery trucks having fake packages with GPS so they can track the thieves running away with the packages. This could be effective.

Fifth, delivery companies will lobby for extra punish for robbing a delivery truck that would deter the gangs a bit.

Overall, the economics of stealing a delivery truck has become more favorable to the gangs. I won’t surprised if we see more delivery truck carjacking.

Praying for a safer and more prosperous America. God bless America!
